We would all like the magic bullet to solve our snoring but because there are various causes of snoring there are equally a variety of stop snoring solutions. The snoring mouthpiece is just one of many stop snoring devices available.
A snoring mouthpiece device is also known as a dental appliance or for those who want the full medical term, mandibular advancement splint. It is simply a plastic device worn in your mouth when you sleep.
The snoring mouthpiece works by holding your mouth in the correct position to align your lower jaw properly and lift your soft palate. So when the snoring mouthpiece is positioned in your mouth, it prevents your soft throat tissues collapsing and closing your airways. It also helps hold your tongue in its correct position so it does not fall back and block your airways, when you sleep. The partial closure of your airways is what causes you to snore.
These snoring mouthpieces can be brought over the counter or internet, at minimal expense. If you are unsure whether they are suitable for you then buy one over the counter first.
Some devices are heat moulded in your mouth; first by placing in boiling water to soften the plastic then you put the device into your mouth following the instructions about positioning your mouth correctly.
Another form of mouthpiece is a soft double ring-like plastic device that you just place inside your mouth before sleeping. These especially work well for people who sleep with their mouths open, so keeping their mouth closed.
If you find they feel comfortable to wear at night-time and they are reducing your snoring then consider getting one custom moulded for you so they can work more effectively.
This is a more expensive option available through your dentist. The dentist will manufacture a device that is correctly shaped to suit you and made of more durable material.
These mouth pieces have a high success rate in reducing or eliminating snoring. There are a few people who snore though, who have tried these devices and have found they suffer from discomfort, excess salivation or their teeth shifting position. You need to be aware of any changes in your mouth and report to your dentist so they can make any changes quickly.
There are many devices available on the market to help you stop snoring. The stop snoring mouthpiece has a good success rate and is certainly worth a try.
